However, that fresh start feeling normally starts to lose its motivation for me around Valentine's day and my resolutions, more often than not, fall by the wayside.
That is why I was intrigued by Carla Hall's version of resolutions, which she spoke about on the Chew last week. Instead of making resolutions, she and her husband make year long goals. She called it "Operation 2012." Such a small thing, yet very perspective altering, isn't it?
I've been putting together a Pinterest board with my ideas for Operation 2012, Rockin' Granola style.
Here are a few of my goals and dreams for Operation 2012:
1. Take Better Photos
If you're a regular reader of this blog, then you know that photography is not my strength. Oh, sure, I get a lucky shot from time to time, but I really don't know what I'm doing and, more often than not, I miss the moment when I'm behind the lens. I'd love to improve my photography skills and learn how to use the settings on my camera beyond just "point and shoot."
I've love to work my way through My 3 Boybarians' 31 Days to a Better Photo.
2. Hold My Own in the Kitchen
Christopher is the cook in this family, and I'll never dispute that. However, I would like to better hold my own in the kitchen. I'd love to take this Whole Food Kitchen Online Workshop and am thinking of gifting it to myself as a late birthday present.
3. Write More REAL Letters
The holiday card season really made me appreciate how fun it is to get real mail in the mailbox. This is quickly becoming a lost art, but I'm going to do my best to keep it alive. My goal is to write one real letter a week in 2012.
Hopefully if they see me doing so, the kids will follow and I think we'll all have a lot of fun. I've got plans to use my friend Mariah's Playful Learning book as inspiration for a family letter writing station. We're going to start with thank you notes.
4. Declutter
Decluttering is a perpetual thing for me, but I have fallen off of my usual routine since baby Mia arrived. I found this lovely 2012 decluttering calendar and believe it will be easier to tackle things one day at a time.
Speaking of one thing at a time, my friend Tsh' ebook One Bite at a Time: 52 Projects for Making Life Simpler helps readers simplify one week at a time, by taking on a new aspect of simple living each week of the year.
If you haven't read Tsh's excellent book Organized Simplicity, right now Amazon Prime
5. Prepare
I live in a state where we can, and do, get tornadoes 12 months of the year. Add in flooding, winter storms, and other emergencies, and it would be nice to be prepared, just in case. This post from Organizing Junkie on Putting Together an Emergency Preparedness Kit looks like a great place to get started.
I started something like this two kids ago, and it certainly needs updating. I think most of the supplies have long ago been raided from my original stash and I know we don't have diapers in the current size stockpiled, or other preparedness measures.
6. Live Like No One Else
We're continuing on our debt free journey and really want 2012 to be the year we make giant strides in getting 100% out of debt. We want to "live like no one else, so that later you can live like no one else."
We're re-reading our copy of Dave Ramsey's book The Total Money Makeover and I'm really looking forward to The Money Saving Mom's Budget to be released in early January.
What are you hoping to accomplish in 2012?
