Third Grade: Woodworking

Jillian has been doing some woodworking with her Dad.  This has been giving her practice with measurement and also with using some simple hand tools, as well as understanding the importance of safety in the work-shop, listening to directions, and working together to create a project.

Homeschool Reality Check:  At one point in the weekend I walked out to the workshop to find her sitting on the workbench reading a comic book while Chris was busy making a wand to her exact specifications ... someone is learning something, alright! :-)

Comic books aside, Jillian really loves woodworking.  Currently they are making blocks.  Jillian has been measuring different lengths, sawing the wood, and then sanding it.  Max has even gotten involved and been helping to sand blocks, too. The blocks will be given a coating of beeswax finish and then given to Lucy for Christmas this year.

Jillian and her Daddy have also been making and designing more magic wands.  Chris made the kids some wands for Christmas last year and since then has gotten many requests for more.

Jillian helps with the design, sanding, and staining, and Chris does the whittling and assembling.  They make a good team!

Are you doing any wood working projects with your kids?  We'd love to know what you're up to!
