Today we started a Math Main Lesson block. To help review we made a Multiplication Clock. Ours is (more or less) based on Robinsunne's Multiplication Clock - her thorough directions are here.
Our circle is a little shaky because our compass broke so we tried to freehand it (note to self: next time remember the trick to make your own compass with some string and a thumbtack).
Jillian quickly remembered and saw the patterns for the 2's, 5's and 10's .... but it wasn't very long before she started catching on to the other number patterns as we worked our way through the circles and the times tables through the 12s.
Shy, but proud, here she is with her finished Multiplication Clock. She couldn't wait for Chris to get home tonight so she could show her Daddy her work!
(we've already got plans to make a HUGE one in the driveway with sidewalk chalk once the weather gets warmer)
Time: 18 minutes

That is so cool! I am so going to do that with my 8 YO, who is just starting multiplication!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! Kayla made one when she started learning her multiplication tables, too, and it helped SO much! :)
ReplyDeleteHow COOL is this?! Oh, I wish I had someone to teach multiplication tables to me that way when I was in elementary school. I remember that being one of the HARDEST things to grasp from early years math.
ReplyDeleteLove the idea of a driveway clock, too. Hope we get to see pictures of that one! So fun.
cool, I am bookmarking this IDEA!
ReplyDeleteVery cool...i wonder if it would help cement the times tables for C. We used "times tales" for 6,7,8,9 but he still struggles with the rest a bit too. (and we've moved on to long division so he needs to know them!)
ReplyDeleteHope you are having a fab week so far~ I'm around but crazy busy with chaos. Lots of hugs!
I think it might help Tanya. Jillian is like me - a visual learner. To be able to see the patterns as she was working her way around the clock helped things click into place and, while it was a little intimidating for her at first, very quickly she started to see the relationships between the numbers. I think this will be a good tool for her to have to refer back to, as well.
ReplyDeleteI think we'll keep doing different variations of this from time to time - it seems to be helpful to take a break from working individual times tables and see them as a WHOLE as well.
Thanks for the kind words, everyone. I'm really proud of Jillian :-)
Very cool! My kid learned some song, but I think he'd do better if he could see what he's singing about it. We'll be giving this a try!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant - what a totally cool idea!!! Love it!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome - my daughter is a visual learner too - and this is so perfect to tech her numbers as we move ahead!
